Description
Potassium sulphate (SOP) 0-0-50 carries 500 kg of potash (K2O) in every tonne, together with sulphur, and no chloride at all. That last point is the whole reason it exists as a separate product.
Supplied in bulk, bulka bags or bagged from 10 MT, delivered Australia-wide and shipped worldwide, with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet against the batch supplied.

Where Potassium Sulphate Is Used
Potassium governs water movement, sugar transport and cell wall strength — which shows up in the paddock as fruit size, firmness, shelf life and drought tolerance rather than as leaf growth you can see.
Chloride-sensitive crops
Potatoes, tobacco, grapes, citrus, berries, avocados and many vegetables. In these crops chloride reduces quality and yield, so the cheaper potassium source is the wrong one however attractive the price per unit.
Fruit quality and finish
Late-season potassium for size, firmness, colour and sugar. This is where potassium earns its keep in horticulture.
Sulphur alongside potassium
SOP supplies both in one product, which saves a separate sulphur application where the soil test calls for it.
Saline and marginal soils
Chloride adds to the salt load a crop already has to cope with. On soils or irrigation water that are already salty, leaving chloride out is worth paying for.
Chloride-free blends and fertigation
SOP is the potassium base for blends going onto sensitive crops. Soluble grades are used through irrigation — tell us if the product is going through a drip system and we will confirm the grade before you order.
SOP or MOP? The Chloride Question
Muriate of potash (MOP, potassium chloride) is the cheaper potassium source per unit and the right choice for a great deal of broadacre cropping. It carries chloride, which most field crops tolerate perfectly well.
The decision is not about which product is better. It is about which crop you are growing.
| SOP 0-0-50 | MOP 0-0-60 | |
|---|---|---|
| Potash | 50% K2O | 60% K2O |
| Also supplies | Sulphur | Chloride |
| Cost per unit of K | Higher | Lower |
| Use on | Potatoes, grapes, citrus, berries, tobacco, most vegetables; saline soils | Cereals, pasture, sugarcane, rice, oil palm and other chloride-tolerant crops |
If you are unsure which side your crop falls on, send us the soil test and the crop and we will match a product and a rate.
Packing and Quantities
Potassium Sulfate 0-0-50 is supplied in bulk, in 1,000 kg and 500 kg bulka bags, and in 50 kg and 25 kg bags. Minimum order is 10–25 MT, depending on the product and the destination. Packing formats, 20ft container loading figures, and bagging and marking are set out in full on our Delivery & Freight page.
Handling and Storage
Store Potassium Sulfate 0-0-50 dry, off the ground and out of direct weather. Nitrogen and ammonium-based fertilisers draw moisture from the air and will cake if left exposed — full handling and storage guidance is on the Delivery & Freight page.
Potassium Sulphate — Common Questions
How much potassium is in a tonne of SOP?
500 kg of potash as K2O, plus sulphur. At 100 kg per hectare that is 50 kg of K2O per hectare.
Why is SOP more expensive than MOP?
Because of how it is made. Muriate of potash is mined and processed directly; potassium sulphate generally requires a further conversion step. You are paying to have the chloride removed — which on a chloride-sensitive crop is worth it, and on a tolerant one is not.
Is sulphate of potash the same as potassium sulphate?
Yes — sulphate of potash, SOP, potassium sulphate and K2SO4 all mean the same product.
Can SOP be used in fertigation?
Soluble grades are made for exactly that. Standard granular grades are not intended for drip systems. Tell us the system it is going through when you enquire and we will confirm the right grade.
Does SOP acidify soil?
Far less than ammonium-based fertilisers such as ammonium sulphate. SOP is close to neutral in its effect on soil pH, which is another reason it suits established horticulture.
Potassium Sulfate 0-0-50 Data Sheet
A Certificate of Analysis for your delivered batch and the Safety Data Sheet are both available on request. The analysis in the data sheet is the nominal specification; where a Certificate of Analysis is issued for a batch, that certificate governs.
