Description
Ammonium sulphate 21-0-0 carries 210 kg of nitrogen and around 240 kg of sulphur in every tonne — two nutrients that are commonly short together, in one product.
Its nitrogen is in ammonium form, which behaves quite differently on the soil surface from the nitrogen in urea. Supplied in bulk, bulka bags or bagged from 10 MT, delivered Australia-wide and shipped worldwide, with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet against the batch supplied.

Where Ammonium Sulphate Is Used
Canola, brassicas and other sulphur-hungry crops
Canola removes a great deal of sulphur, and sulphur deficiency in canola costs yield and oil. Ammonium sulphate covers the nitrogen and the sulphur in one pass.
Pasture and cereals on sulphur-deficient country
Sulphur deficiency has become more common as high-analysis fertilisers replaced the old superphosphates that carried sulphur as a matter of course. Sandy soils and high-rainfall districts show it first.
Topdressing where urea would volatilise
Ammonium sulphate does not lose nitrogen to the air the way surface-applied urea can, which makes it the safer nitrogen choice on a warm, damp surface with no rain forecast.
Alkaline soils
Ammonium sulphate acidifies soil as the ammonium nitrifies. On alkaline ground that is a benefit, and it improves the availability of several trace elements at the same time.
As the sulphur component of a blend
Commonly blended with urea to lift the sulphur in a nitrogen application, or with DAP at sowing. Tell us the analysis you want and we will blend to it.
The Acidifying Effect — Useful, Until It Is Not
Every ammonium fertiliser acidifies soil to some degree as the ammonium converts to nitrate. Ammonium sulphate does it more than most, and that is not a flaw — it is why it works so well on alkaline soils.
On soil that is already acidic it is a cost. Continued use pulls pH down further, and below about pH 5.5 in water aluminium becomes available in amounts that damage roots. The answer is not to avoid the product; it is to know your pH, watch it with regular soil tests, and lime when the test says to.
If your soil test shows a pH problem, send it to us with your enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether this is the right nitrogen source for that paddock.
Ammonium Sulphate, Urea or CAN?
| Product | Nitrogen | Sulphur | Effect on soil pH | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonium Sulphate 21-0-0 | 21% | ~24% | Acidifying | Sulphur is short too, or the soil is alkaline |
| Urea 46-0-0 | 46% | — | Mildly acidifying | You want the cheapest nitrogen and can water it in |
| CAN | Part nitrate | — | Close to neutral | You need fast uptake, or the soil is already acidic |
Packing and Quantities
Crystal Ammonium Sulphate 21-0-0 is supplied in bulk, in 1,000 kg and 500 kg bulka bags, and in 50 kg and 25 kg bags. Minimum order is 10–25 MT, depending on the product and the destination. Packing formats, 20ft container loading figures, and bagging and marking are set out in full on our Delivery & Freight page.
Handling and Storage
Store Crystal Ammonium Sulphate 21-0-0 dry, off the ground and out of direct weather. Nitrogen and ammonium-based fertilisers draw moisture from the air and will cake if left exposed — full handling and storage guidance is on the Delivery & Freight page.
Ammonium Sulphate — Common Questions
How much nitrogen and sulphur does a tonne supply?
210 kg of nitrogen and roughly 240 kg of sulphur. At 100 kg per hectare that is 21 kg of N and about 24 kg of S per hectare.
Is ammonium sulphate the same as sulphate of ammonia?
Yes. Sulphate of ammonia, ammonium sulphate, AMS and (NH4)2SO4 are the same product.
Why use it instead of urea, when urea has twice the nitrogen?
Three reasons: it supplies sulphur, it does not volatilise off the surface the way urea can, and it acidifies alkaline soil. Where none of those matter, urea is cheaper per unit of nitrogen and usually the better buy.
Will it lower my soil pH?
Yes, over time. That is an advantage on alkaline soil and a cost on acidic soil. Test regularly and lime when the test calls for it.
Is the crystalline grade different from the granular?
The analysis is the same; the particle size is not. Crystalline is finer and dissolves faster, which suits dissolving and fertigation; granular spreads more evenly at wide bout widths. Tell us how it is going out and we will confirm which grade suits.
Crystal Ammonium Sulphate 21-0-0 Data Sheet
A Certificate of Analysis for your delivered batch and the Safety Data Sheet are both available on request. The analysis in the data sheet is the nominal specification; where a Certificate of Analysis is issued for a batch, that certificate governs.
