Description
Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is a nitrogen fertiliser supplying its nitrogen entirely in ammonium form, together with chloride. It is a lower-cost nitrogen source for crops that tolerate chloride, and the standard nitrogen fertiliser for rice across much of Asia.
Supplied in bulk, bulka bags or bagged from 10 MT, delivered Australia-wide and shipped worldwide, with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet against the batch supplied.

Where Ammonium Chloride Is Used
Rice
The classic use. In flooded soil, nitrate nitrogen is lost rapidly through denitrification, so a fertiliser that supplies nitrogen as ammonium rather than nitrate keeps more of it available to the crop. Ammonium chloride is used at scale in rice production for exactly this reason.
Coconut, oil palm and other chloride-responsive crops
These crops not only tolerate chloride, they respond to it. Supplying nitrogen and chloride together suits them well.
Wheat and other chloride-tolerant field crops
Where chloride is not a problem and the price per unit of nitrogen is competitive, it does the same job as any other ammonium nitrogen source.
Where a lower-cost nitrogen source is wanted
Ammonium chloride typically sits below urea in cost per tonne but carries less nitrogen, so the comparison that matters is cost per unit of N delivered to your gate. Ask us for both and compare them properly.
The Chloride Limits Where It Can Go
Ammonium chloride carries a large amount of chloride — considerably more, per unit of nitrogen, than any other common nitrogen fertiliser. That rules it out for a specific list of crops and situations.
- Do not use on chloride-sensitive crops: potatoes, tobacco, grapes, citrus, berries, avocados and many vegetables. Use ammonium sulphate or urea instead.
- Watch total salt on saline soils and where irrigation water is already salty.
- It acidifies soil as the ammonium nitrifies, much as ammonium sulphate does. Useful on alkaline ground, a cost on acidic ground. Monitor pH with regular soil tests and lime when the test calls for it.
Send us the soil test and the crop and we will say plainly whether this is the right nitrogen source for that paddock — on a good number of Australian soils it is not, and we would rather tell you before you buy it.
Ammonium Chloride, Urea or Ammonium Sulphate?
| Product | Nitrogen | Also carries | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonium Chloride | About 25% | Chloride | Rice, coconut, oil palm and other chloride-tolerant crops |
| Urea 46-0-0 | 46% | — | Lowest cost per unit of N, and you can water it in |
| Ammonium Sulphate | 21% | Sulphur | Sulphur is short as well, or chloride is unacceptable |
Ammonium Chloride — Common Questions
How much nitrogen does it supply?
Around 250 kg of nitrogen per tonne at a 25% grade. Nitrogen content varies slightly between grades, so check the Certificate of Analysis for the batch you receive.
Why use it on rice instead of urea?
In flooded soil, nitrogen that converts to nitrate is lost quickly through denitrification. Ammonium chloride supplies ammonium nitrogen, which is held in the soil and stays available to the crop.
Which crops must not receive it?
Chloride-sensitive crops — potatoes, tobacco, grapes, citrus, berries, avocados and many vegetables. The chloride load is high, so this matters more here than with muriate of potash.
Is it the same as the ammonium chloride used in industry?
The same compound, but grades differ. Fertiliser grade is specified for nutrient content; industrial and pharmaceutical grades are specified for purity and cost more. Tell us the use and we will quote the right grade.
Does it lower soil pH?
Yes, like other ammonium fertilisers. That helps on alkaline soils and hurts on acidic ones. Test and lime accordingly.
Packing and Quantities
Ammonium Chloride is supplied in bulk, in 1,000 kg and 500 kg bulka bags, and in 50 kg and 25 kg bags. Minimum order is 10–25 MT, depending on the product and the destination. Packing formats, 20ft container loading figures, and bagging and marking are set out in full on our Delivery & Freight page.
Handling and Storage
Store Ammonium Chloride dry, off the ground and out of direct weather. Full handling and storage guidance is on the Delivery & Freight page.
A Certificate of Analysis for your delivered batch and the Safety Data Sheet are both available on request. Where a Certificate of Analysis is issued for a batch, that certificate governs.
Ammonium Chloride 25-0-0 Data Sheet
A Certificate of Analysis for your delivered batch and the Safety Data Sheet are both available on request. The analysis in the data sheet is the nominal specification; where a Certificate of Analysis is issued for a batch, that certificate governs.
