Buying Fertiliser in South Australia

Green granular compound fertiliser, close-up

We blend and supply from Kapunda Rd, Hamilton SA 5373, in the Barossa district, and deliver across every state and territory. South Australia is home ground, and it happens to be the state where product choice matters most — because of the soils.

The thing that changes the answer here: alkaline soils

Much of South Australia’s cropping country is alkaline, and a good deal of it is calcareous — free lime in the profile. That is not a minor regional quirk. It changes which products work.

Phosphorus availability peaks around pH 6–7. Above that, calcium ties phosphate up, so applied phosphorus becomes less available than the same rate would be on neutral ground. Two practical consequences:

  • Placement matters more. Banding near the seed beats broadcasting, because the crop can only reach what is close to it before the soil locks it away.
  • MAP often outperforms DAP here. MAP’s reaction zone is mildly acidic, DAP’s is alkaline. On soil that is already alkaline, that difference around the granule can matter for early uptake. It is not universal — see the full comparison — but it is the reason the default answer in SA is not automatically the default answer elsewhere.

Trace element availability falls on high-pH soils too, which is why zinc and manganese come up more often in South Australian soil tests than in acid-soil districts.

By district

District What usually drives the decision
Barossa & Adelaide Hills Viticulture and horticulture alongside mixed farming. Often smaller tonnages, more precise analyses, and a preference for chloride-free potassium — sulphate of potash rather than muriate
Mid North & Clare Cereal and canola country. Starter phosphorus at seeding, nitrogen through the season, alkaline soils common
Yorke Peninsula Highly calcareous in parts. Placement and product form matter; trace elements come up regularly
Eyre Peninsula Calcareous sands, long freight legs. Tonnage and delivery planning matter as much as the analysis
Murray Mallee & Riverland Sands hold little potassium or sulphur; both leach. Irrigated horticulture in the Riverland leans to water-soluble grades
South East Pasture, dairy and cropping. Hay and silage export far more potassium off the paddock than grain does — potassium budgets matter

These are patterns, not prescriptions. Your soil test decides, and reading it properly is where the money is.

Delivery and freight

We deliver anywhere in South Australia — and every other state — to farm, depot or port. Freight is charged on weight, so what changes your cost is tonnage and access rather than a metro-versus-regional label.

Three things to tell us up front, because they are what make a quote accurate:

  • Access — can a B-double reach the unloading point, all weather?
  • Unloading — loader, telehandler, forklift, tipping bay, or does the vehicle need to self-unload?
  • Storage — somewhere dry and off the ground, especially if you are buying ahead

Access is the single most common reason a delivery ends up costing more than the quote. More in delivery and freight and the packing guide.
